TEAC PE-505 Fully Balanced Phono Amplifier
Description
Why It Stands Out
Fully Balanced from Input to Output
Unlike conventional phono stages, the PE-505 maintains a fully balanced signal path throughout the entire amplification process. Even signals entering through the RCA inputs are converted to differential processing immediately, helping reduce noise while preserving every nuance captured by your cartridge.
Dual-Mono Circuit Architecture
Separate left and right channel circuitry minimizes crosstalk and interference, creating a wider soundstage, greater channel separation, and a more natural stereo presentation. This dual-mono design is one of the key reasons the PE-505 performs at a true reference level.
Precision RIAA Equalization
TEAC's newly developed NF-type equalization circuit achieves RIAA accuracy within ±0.05dB, ensuring your records are reproduced with exceptional tonal balance and remarkable musical realism. It also includes dedicated DECCA and COLUMBIA equalization curves for many pre-1955 recordings, allowing vintage pressings to sound as they were originally intended.
Optimized for Virtually Any Cartridge
Whether you use a moving magnet or moving coil cartridge, the PE-505 provides extensive adjustment options including selectable gain, load resistance, and load capacitance. A unique load measurement function even helps determine the ideal impedance setting for your cartridge, taking much of the guesswork out of system setup.
Built-In DEMAG Function
Exclusive to the PE-505, the DEMAG function helps demagnetize moving coil cartridges and compatible step-up transformers in approximately 30 seconds. This feature can restore cartridge performance over time and helps maintain optimum playback quality.
Subsonic Detection & Filter
The integrated subsonic meter displays ultra-low-frequency vibration below the audible range, while the switchable 17Hz subsonic filter removes unwanted rumble that can reduce amplifier efficiency and affect speaker performance.
Premium Reference 500 Series Construction
A rigid steel and aluminum chassis, vibration-resistant pinpoint feet, premium internal components, and TEAC's meticulous engineering provide the stable foundation required for reference-quality analog playback while complementing the rest of the Reference 500 Series.
RockOnAV's Take
The PE-505 is one of the most thoughtfully engineered phono preamplifiers in its class. Rather than simply amplifying the tiny signal from your cartridge, TEAC has focused on preserving every musical detail through a fully balanced dual-mono architecture, exceptionally accurate equalization, and extensive cartridge optimization. Features like the DEMAG function, adjustable loading, and support for legacy EQ curves demonstrate that this product was designed by engineers who truly understand vinyl playback. When paired with the TEAC TN-5BB, the balanced XLR connection creates a remarkably quiet, dynamic, and transparent analog front end that competes with significantly more expensive separates.
